The homepage of US-American telework expert Gil Gordon contains a very extensive list of links on telework from all around the world.

Prof. Patricia L. Mokhtarian, director of the Institute of Transportation Studies of the University of California, Davis, is head of the Telecommunications and Travel Research Program. On her website you can also access publications.

Director Ursula Huws has prepared a selective publications list on telework on her Analytica - Social and Economic Research and Consultancy website.

The British telecommunications company BT has listed explanatory notes and projects on telework on their "working-from-home-page" .

On the Herman Miller Network Homepage you can find observations, documents and more on the topic of "Living and Working".

News, publications and other information on telework is offered by a site by Telecommuting Success Inc.

The Telecommuting Knowledge Center is offering news, and valuable and interesting information on the topic. You have to register before accessing the site.

Research projects and publications on the topic are also offered on the website of the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies (CURDS), Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

The Telework Analytics International website contains statistics, software product recommendations and much more.

At the Technical University of Munich a forum for telecooperation was founded with the aim of furthering interdisciplinary exchange and knowledge transfer on the topic of telecooperation. Further information, projects and case studies can be found on the web server telekooperation.de.

The project Office 21 which is carried out under the leadership of the Fraunhofer-Institut für Arbeitswirtschaft und Organisation (IAO) [Institute for Employment Economy and Organisation] aims to present visions of and solutions for the office of the future. (in German)

Austria's TWS TeleWorkShop offers information and support targeted at women who want tu use telework to improve their chances on the labour market .

Ergonomics, Workplace Design and Health and Safety at Work

Practical information, brochures, research reports and more is available from the Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin [Federal Office for Health and Safety at Work]  (BauA). A very useful guide about how to make telework beneficial to your health is avalaible online. (in German)

The website of the Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Sozialordnung [Federal Ministry for Work and Social Order] is a source for information on health and safety at work. Telework is dealt with on a separate page.

Tips and valuable and interesting information can be found on the website of the Technologie-Beratungs-System der Arbeiterkammer Bremen [Technological Advisory System of the Employee Chamber Bremen]. Topics range from EU guidelines on VDU work, the biological effects of electro magnetic radiation to hardware and software ergonomics.

A checklist for the inspection of VDU workstations prepared by German white-collar unions DPG and HV helps with the assessment of tele-workplaces.

The Verwaltungs-Berufsgenossenschaft [Occupational Cooperation for Administration] deals with "Health and Safety at Work" amongst other things. (in German)

Case Studies from Germany

In the framework of the TWIST project of BMW AG, 300 employees from different departments have been turned teleworkers. The whole project including practical examples and results is presented in detail on the website.

In 1992, after a one-year trial phase, Wüstenrot Versicherungs AG introduced the "Paperless Office" in Salzburg. It had been further developed from a concept originally developed in the USA (Paperless Business Transaction Processing).

The [German Post Office Trade Union] Deutsche Postgewerkschaft (DPG) has negotiated a contract with Deutsche Telekom about telework, well documented on this website. (in German)

"Cafe Mondial", a coffee shop with a special flair: You won't get espresso but telelearning classes and information about telework and telecooperation.

Newsletters/Magazines/Forums/Newsgroups

An online-edition of the Telework International Newsletter can be found on the Homepage of the editor KLR Consulting Inc., Canada.

E-ZINE is a free of charge newsletter on telework which is sent to interested parties on E-mail. If you want to be added to the E-mail distribution list, send the following information to webmaster@radiovision.es: Name, E-mail address, Telework areas of Interest, Country.

Teleworker is TCA's magazine which is issued twice monthly.

"TeleOffice" is the only German-speaking magazine that deals with telework exclusively. Much of its contents is online (in German).

The Telearbeitsforum (telework forum)  is available to all interested parties as a communication platform with information, contacts and links covering the whole scope of telework. (in German )

The Internet access provider AOL has set up "Forum Telework" with information, documentation, contact exchange, project examples etc.

Within the trade union's advisory service TELEWISA a telework forum offers assistance and advice. (in German)

"Everything about Telework and the Internet" can be found in the Cyberworker Forum.

At the EU level the European Telework Online is the central place to go for all telework questions. Apart from a discussion forum, FAQ lists and more, there are also country-specific pages with details about the conditions for telework in individual EU member states .

Telecommute America runs two discussion forums, a Telecommuting User Forum for participants of telework programmes and a Telecommuting and Business Forum for business related questions.

FIND/SVP is an important information source for all teleworkers - business research, consulting and management advisory services.

Telecentres

The Satellite Office Association of Japan (SOAJ) which was founded in 1991 aims to further the spread of telecentres with the support of four ministries.

The final report of the Davis Community Network Projects in which telecentres were set up and evaluated can be downloaded on the website of the University of California, Davis.

Britain's Telecottage Association (TCA) is the country's main proponent of the telecottage concept. Its site includes a map with the locations of all telecottages in the UK.

German Projects and Initiatives at "Länder" and Regional Level

Baden-Württemberg's initiative medi@ brings together public projects, public-private-partnerships and social initiatives in the media field. In 6 focal areas the Land presently supports 89 projects with a total volume in excess of 500 Million DM. An Anwenderplattform Telearbeit was set up to bring together local SMEs, corporations and trade unions to support the spread of telework. (in German)

Focal points of the "top elf"-project in Bavaria are the creation of teleworkplaces, qualifying measures for telematics positions, and the development of local information systems.

The government of the Land Brandenburg follows four lines of action with different projects in information and communication technology with the EU supported Brandenburg Informationsstrategie 2006 (BIS 2006). In the province Märkisch-Oderland the Telehaus Oderland is set up within the framework of a model project on the testing of telework.

In Bremen the Technologie-Beratungs-System [Technology Advisory System] of the Employee Chambers informs about seminar series, events, projects and cooperation on the topic.

In the information system Telearbeit Hamburg, the Hamburg Economic Office together with the University of the Federal Army, Hamburg, make a number of useful tips and information, partly with a regional connection, available.

Within the initiative Hessen-Media , Hessen has an action line "Telearbeit/Telekooperation". Here you can find the project "Hessen teleworking"  which itself gives technical advice to 6 different projects.

Within its regional initiative "media NRW", the Land Nordrhein-Westfalen wants to take up intensive measures for the evaluation and dispersion of telework with its "Initiative TeleArbeit NRW". The aim of the embodied taskforce "Telearbeit and Telekooperation"  is the systematic registration of the different forms of telework/telecooperation and the utilisation of synergies in the clustering of project activities in NRW. The final report of a telework pilot in several manufacturing companies can be downloaded in its entirety (in German) .

In Rheinland-Pfalz the Zentrum für Technologie- und Innovationsberatung Südpfalz [Centre for Technology and Innovation Advice] (ZETIS) has been instructed by the Bundesministerium für Forschung und Technolgie [Federal Ministry for Research and Technology] to weigh up the opportunities for teleworkplaces in the Südpfalz (in German). In order to gain first experiences their own offices have been adapted for telework. Further projects will follow. Already, the project "Telework in Rheinland-Pfalz" has been completed. On the website of the telework server a regular stocktake of telework projects is to record the Land's activities as completely as possible in order to be able to develop strategies and measures for furthering of these innovative work forms (in German).

In Saarland the projects "TeleArbeit Saar"  and "Televerwaltung Saar"  are embedded in the Land initiative ‘Telekommunikation' of the Ministeriums für Wirtschaft und Finanzen [Ministry for Economy and Finance]. Innovative businesses and administrations have united in this cooperation project in order to research the potential of telework in each individual field of application and to assess its practical introduction. The Saar-Lor-Lux Telework Web Server  gives information about initiatives and projects in the border region. A consultancy service ("Saarländisches Telearbeits-Competence-Center tacc") was set up by the Siemens Telekooperations Zentrums (STZ) am Deutschen Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI).

The project "Telearbeit in Schleswig-Holstein" has the aim of concept design, implementation and support of teleworkplaces in Schleswig-Holstein. Here, sample contracts of work, work agreements etc are available for download. Brief information on the project is also available.

Obviously many projects are jointly initiated by a number of Federal Lands. An example of this is the project "PoliWork", in which Baden-Württemberg, Hessen and Nordrhein-Westfalen were participating.

German Projects and Initiatives at Federal Level

The Federal Government's pages provide a list of all projects on the information society in Germany.

Within the bmb+f's "Initiative Informationsgesellschaft Deutschland" [Information Society Germany] there is also the area "Telearbeit" (in German). Here various telework projects are supported.

TELESKOP, a project of the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft Köln (IW), supports decision makers in SMEs that want to establish telework.

Projects and Initiatives of the European Union

The aim of the initiative "European Telework Development" (ETD) is the creation of a network of national coordination points.

A further part of the initiative is the already mentioned European Telework Online, an important central contact point for all telework queries. Every year a Status Report is published containing lots of statistics and an overview of current developments concerning the spread of telework in each of the member states.

The ETD itself supports the initiative The Information Society (dis)Abilities Challenge (IsdAC).

The main aim of the consensus orientated project DIPLOMAT is the development of guidelines for the introduction and dispersion of telework throughout Europe. One result is the W.I.S.E. (The Work, Information Society and Employment Forum), in which leading representatives from economics, politics and associations are assembled in order to further new work forms such as telework in the information society.

Telework Europe, a project of the European Commission for promoting the Telematics Applications Programme (TAP), is the unofficial website of Telematics for Urban and Rural Areas (TURA) sector of TAP, and as such is the central contact point regarding telework activities.

The research project MIRTI, which is supported within the framework of TAP, researches basic questions confronting trade unions on the one hand and businesses and public administration on the other hand, when faced with the challenge to develop new telework based structures.

In its European Telework Week the EU-Commission awards outstanding telework projects with the European Telework Awards. Here are the winners of 1999.

Projects and Initiatives of International Organisations

The Global Inventory Project of the G7 lists national and international projects on the information society (also on telework).

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has published recommendations for legal standards for home workers and teleworkers (Home Work Convention No. 177 and Home Work Recommendations No. 184). The documents can be downloaded from the organisation's website.

The international federation of private sector employees (FIET) has initiated the campaign "Online Rights for Online-employees".

Projects and Initiatives in Other Countries

Austria's telework information server Telework.at is meant to stimulate discussion on telework as a central information clearing house (in German). It offers an overview of online publications, tele-initiatives, and pilot projects of businesses in our neighbouring country (in German).

In Belgium the Belgian TeleWorking Association (BTA) supports telework through various activities.

The telework group of the University of Tampere reports about activities and projects in Finland. The Centre for Extension Studies of Turku University also provides information.

The Association Française du Télétravail et des Télé-activités (A.F.T.T.) gives information about telework activities in France (in French).

For Great Britain, the British national Andrew Bibby presents an extensive study on the topic "Telework and the Trade Unions" in which he refers to examples from all over the world. Furthermore, articles on offshore telework, the telework project in Scotland, as well as telework in British local authorities can be found on his website.

In Scotland, "Highland Telematics", a private provider of telework services, offers a network for businesses as well as teleworkers.

With regard to telework in Greece, Zeus Teleworking  may be mentioned.

Telework Ireland is the organisation for teleworkers in Ireland. Their website offers extensive information on the current status of telework in the country.

In Italy, besides the telework community SIT, Patrizio Di Nicola is an especially competent contact partner in the telework field (in Italian).

In the USA, AT&T have embodied telework into their company philosophy after positive experiences made with 2 large pilot projects in Los Angeles (1989) und Phoenix (1990). A special telework guide proves an extensive resource for those interested in the implementation of telework.

After a successful trial phase, the state of Arizona is planning a further extension of telework. For this, the Arizona Department of Administration (ADOA) has developed a telecommuting programme, which is hoped to reduce costs and effort for the individual authorities and facilitate its introduction.

Smart Valley is a project in California in which telework plays an important role. Under Telecommute America there are for example results of the Telecommuting Survey 1997 as well as the commendable "Telecommuting Guide". Furthermore, 2 discussion forums are available.

If you are interested in this federal state, you should also have a look at the Californian Department of Personnel Administration (DPA) which, since 1995, has been supporting telework through programmes and pilot projects.

In New York, the International Workplace Studies Program (IWSP) at Cornell University wants to combine research with the new work forms.

The Telecommuting Safety & Health Benefits Institute in Oregon deals with the safety and health aspects of telework.

Trade Unions, Associations and Organisations

In the research project MIRTI businesses, technology developers, research institutions, trade unions and public administrations from different countries are working together.

The trade union advisory service TELEWISA is aimed at waged and salaried employees, part time workers, independent and freelance workers and the self employed who do telework (in German).

The trade union Öffentliche Dienste Transport und Verkehr [public service, transport and traffic] (ÖTV) states its view on telework.

The "Online-Forum-Telearbeit" serves employee oriented advice on telework (in German).

The German Teleworkers Association (Verband Telearbeit Deutschland e.V.) provides a national platform for people and companies being interested and/or who are involved in teleworking, telecommuting or distributed work. It´s main goal aims at the provision of information to compensate the still tremendous information deficit related to new methods of work, especially in the field of teleworking (in German).
